Dear CIA Family,

School starts August 17. We know many of you are waiting for information on our Covid mitigation policy.  Thanks so much for your patience as we navigate this uncharted territory.

At this time, we are not requiring face coverings. We are taking state and CDC guidelines into consideration and believe we can operate without masks due to our small class sizes, strategic changes in scheduling/student movement, and increased hygienic vigilance. Examples of changes include keeping elementary and secondary populations separated, using different entrances and restrooms; eating lunch in classrooms rather than common areas; and using assigned seating to promote cohorts (or as we like to call them “posses.”) These are just a few examples of the ways we are striving to keep your kids safe while maintaining as much normalcy as possible and not sacrificing our sense of community.

These decisions were based on numbers reported as of August 3, by the Kenai Peninsula Borough. The active COVID-19 case numbers were 32 of our “Central Peninsula” area population of 37,095. These represent a current community infection rate of .086%.  We will continue to diligently monitor community transmission rates, and appreciate your understanding that our mitigation plan may need to be updated for the safety of staff and students.

The board would like to thank our committee of medical professionals who spent countless hours researching and providing recommendations which were taken into consideration as the board formulated our plan.

At Cook Inlet Academy we partner with families.  If you want your child(ren) to wear face coverings, we fully support that.  Some of our staff may also choose to wear face coverings or shields.  We will encourage and support you to do what is right for your family and child, and ask that you provide us with an abundance of grace as we move forward.

More details will be discussed at the Parent Night on Thursday, August 13, at 5:30 pm. We ask that at least one parent from each family, Preschool through 12th, attends this informational meeting. Adults only, in the gym, distancing encouraged. See you there!

Prayerfully Moving Forward,

The CIA School Board
